"My job? Getting You Back To Your Life."
Supporting people through their health and wellness challenges and watching them flourish again is the most rewarding part of my job. I have the privilege of being let into other people's lives, and get to listen to them, work with them, learn from them - it all keeps me motivated and inspired. Most people who come to see me have been recommended by someone else. They are motivated to spread the word because they have had a positive experience and a good outcome.
I started my professional life as a linguist and spent several years working in international consumer research. From there I moved into healthcare research specialising in patient experience feedback and developing tools to measure and improve doctors' communication skills. Whilst this was interesting work, I hadn't found my niche. Recognising that I was far more fascinated by people and health than products and data, I decided to make some changes. After trying acupuncture for myself, and seeing gradual but profound results, I became captivated by this fascinating form of healthcare and went on to train as an acupuncturist. After qualifying in 2009 I established busy practices in Oxford and Fleet (Hampshire) before moving to Taunton in 2020 where I now live with my family.
In the early years of my practice, clients came to see me for all sorts of things. But increasingly, women were coming with gynaecological issues, particularly fertility. I quickly realised that this is not an area to be ‘dabbled’ in - you need specialist knowledge of both western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). So I set about getting that knowledge, studying for post-graduate qualifications, attending lots of courses and incorporating the learnings into my work. I continue to hone my skills – I will never stop learning, I enjoy it too much – but do feel that I have a unique set of core skills specifically developed to support both the physical and emotional patterns that are involved in this kind of work.
Even after twelve years I am still amazed and fascinated by the influence a few needles can have, and have seen time and time again the difference we can make to Fertility, Pregnancy and Gynaecological issues. I meet so many women who have chalked up their obstetric and gynaecological challenges to bad luck, genetics or just thinking that it’s normal. I’m here to tell you there is a lot we can do to make things better if you’re prepared to give it a bit of time and follow through on any lifestyle changes suggested.
I’m a firm believer in the value of integrating western and Chinese medicine approaches, especially relevant for assisted conception like IVF or ICSI. Mindset is another important strand of my work. Having long been an advocate for mindfulness, and fascinated by neuroscience, I decided to study this in more depth and now have a teaching qualification in mindfulness and compassion. I weave these elements into my one-to-one work and, from time-to-time, offer more in-depth courses for groups.
